Set study. A launch night for VEILLE I,
staged in a found industrial space.

One motif crosses the set in three states,
and the visitor meets them in order.INCISED
New panel walls are inserted into the existing space.
On the first, the motif is engraved as a line drawing,
a single dark void at its centre.
PIERCED
Further on, the same motif is carved in full depth.
The ornament breaks through the wall
and holds the opening.
FREED
In the last room the motif stands on the floor:
VEILLE I, a stretched textile piece on a pointed frame,
carrying its own light.
ROOM
Everything found is kept:
wallpaper, beams, raw concrete floor.
Black leather platforms are the only furniture.
The event runs at night,
and the set owes nothing to daylight.

VEIL
A luminous piece to set on the floor.
NAME
In French the name holds four readings at once:
the eve, the moment before night;
the wake, a presence gathered around a glow;
to keep watch,
a silent act of guard;
and standby, a dormant charge.
In English it crosses over as Vigil.
OBJECT
A sculpted volume with sharp protruding edges,
two tiers on a tubular steel frame,
drawn in at a median ring. 1100 mm high,
700 by 700 on the floor.
A large globe bulb hangs inside from the ring,
The fabric passes 20 to 30 percent of its light.
STATES
Off, it reads as a sculpted piece
in its own right,
and does not wait for light to make sense.
Lit, the same surface
holds a contained inner glow
that does not spread into the room.
The object comes alive without becoming a lamp.
USE
A piece for the end of the day,
set on the floor or a low console,
lit at dusk.
An entrance, a landing,
the corner of a bedroom.
A hotel lobby, a gallery, a ceremonial space.
